c1870 ANTIQUE VICTORIAN 15ct GOLD DIAMOND CLASSICAL ETRUSCAN REVIVAL RING

The Grand Tour was a trend devised as a kind of ‘finishing school’ for the wealthy that began with the Georgian period, continuing throughout the Victorian age, and which was meant to complete (very much primarily men’s) education with a lengthy European trip around the Mediterranean;  taking in the sights of ancient Greece, Rome, the Islands of the Aegean, and environs. As well as an education, this long trip was designed for young men to prepare themselves for marriage, and all the responsibilities of adulthood.

    The visual culture styles of these ancient peoples  were incorporated into domestic fashions in art, architecture, and jewellery, inspired by the souvenirs brought back to Britain on the Grand Tourists return. The Etruscan Revival was particularly successful and popular c1860-90 and was characterised by yellow gold relief-embellished with applied wirework, beading, swirls, and incising stylised patterns of geometric lines and shapes, and often featured turquoise, garnet, or diamond.

CONDITION:

EXCELLENT THROUGHOUT the diamond is bright white with black intense sparkle. The ring shank is perfectly in round, with no thinning or vulnerable points. The ring is immediately wearable. It is a substantial size at 19mm internal diameter and could suit both men and women. Resizing large rings down is very cheap and much simpler than increasing the size as no additional gold, or technical gold-smithing is required. Would make an ideal Christmas or Birthday gift for any lover of antique jewellery.
